What is the difference between damper, shock absorber?

A shock absorbers is a mechanical or hydraulic device designed to absorb and damp shock impulses. It does this by converting the kinetic energy of the shock into another form of energy (typically heat) which is then dissipated. Damper and strut are types of shock absorbers used in automobiles for absorbing the shocks created due to contour of roads and to provide a comfortable ride to the passenger.
Shock damper is a shock absorber that is used in independent suspension system to absorb the vibrational energy by resisting motion via viscous friction. Pneumatic and hydraulic shock absorbers are used in conjunction with cushions and springs. An automobile shock absorber contains spring-loaded check valves and orifices to control the flow of oil through an internal piston. Damper is widely used in mono suspension system in motorcycles, cars, mopeds and light weight vehicles. It is most efficient in absorbing the vibration and shocks and hence it is widely used in luxury vehicles to provide comfort.
